Teacher LaoMa has ben teaching in the area for 30 years
Black Bamboo Pavilion offers classes in Taiji (commonly referred to as tai chi). Classes are taught in Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Pittsboro. Offerings include hand form, weapons forms, push hands and Chinese brushwork
LaoMa has practiced Chinese arts for over four and a half decades, and was the founder and chief instructor, from 1975 to 1985, of the Tidewater Tai-Chi Club (and a co-founder of the Tidewater Tai-Chi Center) in Norfolk, Virginia. From Oct-Nov 1975, LaoMa made his first visit to China, traveling to various Minority Chinese Regions as a guest of the Chinese government, having the grand opportunity to play Taijiquan with groups of ordinary people from Beijing to Xian to Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Changsha and Shanghai. He received his M.A. in Asian Studies at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia in 1980. He lived and worked in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China from 1985 to 1988. While there, he trained at 91 year old Grandmaster Ding Hongkui's Snake Hill Pavilion School, and was Ding Hongkui's last student, as well as his first, and only, foreign one. He has taught for 27 years with Magic Tortoise Taijiquan School.
